Dick Beals - recorded at F.O.T.R. in
Newark, NJ in October of 1999.
[Download
MP3](9.72mb) The voice of Speedy Alka-Seltzer for many years, Dick has made his
contribution to popular culture. When you sing "plop, plop,
fizz, fizz ... oh what a relief it is" to yourself, think of Dick
Beals. Dick is also a part of old time radio history having played
many juvenile roles throughout his career. His voice has not changed
much in that time and he can still play these roles to this day, which he
does at Friends Of Old Time Radio conventions. Author of the
motivational and autobiographical book, "Think Big", Dick is a
fascinating fella to talk to. |

John Dunning - recorded by
telephone
[Download
MP3](9.06mb) Aside from being a successful mystery writer with titles like "Booked To Die" and his latest, "Two O'Clock, Eastern Wartime", John Dunning is much revered in old time radio circles. He penned the original 'OTR Bible', "Tune In Yesterday". This book, long out of print, fetched prices of up to $300 at conventions. Luckily for all of us who don't have that much for the ultimate OTR reference book, John has recently put together an updated version of that book entitled, "On The Air: The Encyclopedia Of Old Time Radio". This new book comes in at a whopping 822 pages and is sure to satisfy the needs of any OTR collector. John also collects OTR and hosted his own radio show for a time where he played otr and interviewed some of radio's greatest names. |

Larry Stevens
- recorded at F.O.T.R. in
Newark, NJ in October of 1999.
[Download
MP3](10.1mb) Larry came to The Jack Benny Program as a replacement singer for Dennis Day, who was going into the Navy. On the show, Larry crooned his tunes and, unlike Dennis, played it straight and chatted with Benny and cast for a time but did not participate in the sketches except for a few lines here and there. According to Larry, Benny felt he did not have enough time to build him a character such as Dennis or Kenny Baker as he would only be there two years until Dennis Day returned from his stint in the Navy. In more recent years, Larry has recorded a CD of classics entitled, "The Years Of My Youth". Sadly, Larry passed away in April, 2000 from Cancer. He was a wonderful guy to talk to and this is probably one of the last interviews he ever gave. |

Beverly Washburn - recorded at F.O.T.R. in
Newark, NJ in October of 1999.
[Download
MP3](2.93mb) By the age of five Beverly Washburn was well on her way to stardom! Beverly's credits include major roles in some classic motion pictures like "Old Yeller" and the Oscar-winning "Here Comes the Groom" with Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman. In the days of live TV, she acted on the most prestigious dramatic programs like "Playhouse 90." But Beverly's career was not limited to television and movies. She has taught acting, performed comedy on stage in Las Vegas with Jack Benny, and her 1962 recording "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" hit the national record charts! By the time she reached her teens, Beverly had appeared in more than 500 TV shows and movies. Watching Beverly on TV's "Star Trek" as she grew old and died in Captain Kirk's arms, or seeing her performance as a sexy, deranged murderess in a thriller with Lon Chaney, Jr., has given her "cult status!" Beverly even had a delightful appearance on The Jack Benny Program on television where she claimed to be Margaret Truman much to Jack's chagrin. Beverly is currently represented by Yesterday
USA's own Rick Saphire! Make sure you visit Beverly's web page http://www.beverlywashburn.com View her entry in the Internet Movie Database. |
