The Glowing Dial Archives

The Glowing Dial Archives began as a meager collection in a shoe box belonging to Big John.  As a teenager he would check out shows from his local libraries and dub them for his collection.  At the time, Big John ignorantly thought that there were maybe a few old-timers out there collecting and that shows were relatively hard to come by.  Was he ever wrong!  With his discovery of Yesterday USA Radio and otr conventions, Big John and Steve started collecting otr in a big way.

As for otr conventions, they have attended Jay Hickerson's Friends Of Old Time Radio Convention, which is held in Newark, New Jersey when they could as well as The Cincinatti Old Time Radio Convention.  There, they raid the dealers rooms, especially on Saturday afternoon, when some dealers offer specially selected tapes for $1.00 each!  Big John also trades otr with many people on the internet as well as fellow YUSA members.  The Glowing Dial Archives now boasts over 6000 titles and is growing by leaps and bounds.

OTR Trading and Dubbing Service

Big John and Steve are always trying to add new and better sounding shows to the Archives and would love to trade otr with anyone out there.  After viewing our Archive List and Grading Criteria, make up a want list of the shows you would like and E-mail or Snail Mail it to us.  Also be sure to send along your list of shows that you have in your collection so that we may select what shows we would like in return from you in the trade.  Quality is very important to us so we wish to trade for good sounding shows that are as complete as possible.  How many times have we, as collectors, been burned by dealers out there who are selling edited, bad sounding shows?  We are currently going through our archives and purging most shows in this category, especially if we already have a better copy of it.  Some shows with problems will be retained as filler copies until something better comes along.  It is our goal to list any significant problem a given show might have.  We check the shows out before we complete the trade just in case.  We will always let you know of any sound problems beforehand.  We want you to be satisfied with your trade with us.  If you have little or nothing to trade, please do still contact us and I'm sure we can work something out.  We are not interested in being a dealer, we just want to help out our fellow collectors.

Note: We usually prefer to get our trades on audio or data cd in an uncompressed format such as wav or FLAC.  We do not prefer anything off newsgroups unless it is of a high bitrate and very good quality.

Most of the shows we have can be transferred to the following formats:

As far as encoding shows in goes, the amount of shows we get on a given disk may vary due to show length and sampling rate.  Please note that if your chosen shows are not yet encoded, it will take longer to fulfill your trade.  We can encode in MP3, WMA, RA, FLAC, APE, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and WAV formats.

You can determine in which format we have each show in our Archives by looking at the first field on the list.

Long time since last update huh?  Working on a nifty searchable database system but it's gonna take a while. :-(
